Becca's selection and rejection for front cover
I rejected this image and many more like it because one of the models aren't looking at the camera which ruins the shot. The white background isn't bright enough either.
Unfortunately one of the models had to go home because she felt ill. I needed two girls and couldn't get hold of anyone else so I had to model. My brother took the photos and my mum helped.
I rejected this image and many more like it because the models are too far away from each other. The white background isn't bright enough either.
I accepted this image for my front cover because the light reflects nicely off our faces. The image follows the rule of thirds and it will look good with a plain white background which I will use photo shop to edit in. There are also a couple of blemishes on the photo such as a gap in the fringe of the blonde model, this however will be easy to edit.
Becca's selection and rejection for contents page
I accepted this image for the contents page. This picture is from the same photo shoot as the above image so it also matches the house style. The photo was taken in my back garden and I did it here because the light was really bright and when my helper held the white card up the light reflected really well off the features of the photo. The prop again is the guitar but the model is holding it in a different position so the light reflected off the brown colour nicely and made it stand out. This is a centre-shot as the model is in the centre of the photo and does not follow the rule of thirds. He is looking into the distance and this makes the reader want to know what he's thinking.
I rejected this image. The picture fits with the magazines house style as it is black white and orange and I dressed the model in a black t-shirt.This photo was taken in my back garden and I chose to do it here because the light was really bright and when my helper held the white card up the light reflected really well off the features of the artists face. The prop is a guitar because the artist is Matty Brundell and he plays the guitar and he is the top artist of the edition. I used the rule of thirds as he is on the third line to the right of the image. I chose to use a mid-shot for this image as you can see the body of the guitar. He is looking into the distance and this makes the reader want to know what he's thinking.
I rejected this image. The picture fits with the magazines house style as it is black white and orange and I dressed the model in a black t-shirt. The background is white and this makes the models t-shirt colour stand out. Which also matches the house style.

Poppy's DPS article!
The harmonious and intoxicating sound of up and coming band ‘Blue Eyes Don’t Lie’ has captivated the town of Hull and left many stunned by their raw and unique talent! After only having been together for a little over four months they’re tight and crisp music would suggest differently. The band’s original line up was formulated in May this year and despite a few alterations and replacements to the group the current four members of the band stand strong and appear to be making a bee-line for the top!
In April 2011 lead singer and rhythmic guitar player Josh Mott contacted the five possible members via the social network, Facebook, informing them of his intention to start a band. After days of exchanging various covers by each individual, Josh came to a decision and organised for the five strangers to meet. The group of five consisted of Josh Mott himself, Danny Binnington the lead guitarist, Connor Hodgins the base guitarist, a synth player and a drummer. Following numerous rehearsals the group agreed they no longer required a synthesizer and chose to replace drummer, Lewis Tillison, with current member Tom Furniss. The adjustments have helped the artists play to their full potential and the outcome is a truly stimulating sound. Maybe facebook is an asset after all?
The band currently places themselves in the pop-rock category of music. However, as their music develops they are gradually edging to the slightly more diverse genre of alternative-rock with its loud and distorted guitar sounds. The bands main influences include, British rock band ‘You Me At Six’ and world famous group ‘The Blackout’, purely for their originality and raw talent. Amongst their busy schedules the boys still find time to rehearse both at home separately and together in various studios around Hull’s city centre. One of them a youth centre located on Holderness road and another, a studio situated on Newland Avenue. The boys often spend a minimum of three hours practicing and perfecting their songs. Depending on upcoming gigs the hours of rehearsal tend to vary, reaching five to six consecutive hours! These boys clearly don’t believe in doing things by halves!
The boys are continuously producing new melodies and songs and working on ways to expand. Three of their most popular songs have been their first ever piece produced ‘Room for Improvement’, the exceptional and first class song ‘Nothing at All’ and the weird but wonderful ‘Passion is your Worst Enemy’, all of which have received a standing ovation from their crowds of supporters. The band have hosted some of the hottest gigs, they’re first at Hull’s well-known event ‘The Freedom Festival’ on the 3rd of September. The group also stole the show in ‘The Sesh’ at ‘Linnet and Lark’ this month already guaranteeing them a spot at the next play date in January 2012. It seems ‘Blue Eyes Don’t Lie’ are looking at a busy year next year before they’ve even had chance to finish this one!
It has now become evident that promoters have began to follow the band’s movements and are showing an ever-growing interest in their exclusive style. Warren Records, Smash it Up Productions and Arcade Promotions are just some of the bands main followers. At this stage in the world of music the boys are excelling at a rapid rate. As a group they aim to turn their dream into a career and make an impact on the millions of music lovers out there. It is also an aspiration of theirs to tour the United Kingdom and eventually tour worldwide, performing in some of the biggest venues such as the O2 Arena and the M.E.N Arena. They strive to reach their goals no matter what the sacrifices!
‘Blue Eyes Don’t Lie’ is beyond question the future of music. Their raw talent and passion could be the key needed to re-establish quality sound beyond all of the computerisation and editing of modern day-music.
“To us, music is more a way of life than just a hobby” says lead guitarist, Danny Binnington. A truly inspiring statement!

Becca's DPS Article - What did you expect from the Vaccines?
What did you expect from the Vaccines?
Formed in early 2010, the band consists of Justin Young (guitar/vocals; formerly known as acoustic folk artist Jay Jay Pistolet), Arni Hjorvar (bass), Freddie Cowan (guitar) and Pete Robertson (drums). Initially, the band was formed by Young and Cowan in the summer of 2009. After months of attempting to perfect their sound, they uploaded a demo of 'If You Wanna' to YouTube in August 2010. where it received a lot of praise from people, Zane Lowe in particular, who named it as his 'Hottest Record in the World' on the 18th of August 2010.
After playing their first gig, they embarked on their debut UK tour between September and November 2010, and the publics interest in the band led their first London performance to sell out. The show was awarded 4 out of 5 by The Guardian and described by Clash as 'fantastic, exhilarating and exciting'.
On the 29th of November 2010, the band released their debut single “Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra)”/ “Blow it Up”, which was limited to 1000 copies and released on Marshall Teller Records. Both Videos for the double a-side were directed by Doug Hart of The Jesus and Mary Chain fame and Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra), reached number 157 in the UK singles chart. Only one minute and 24 seconds long, it was named 'Track of the day' by Q magazine and was well received critically. They recorded their first ever radio session for Marc Riley's BBC 6 Music show in December 2010. Also, they performed live with Jools Holland, the first ever band to do so before releasing a single.
On January the 6th the Vaccines were placed third in the BBC's sound of 2011 poll and in the same week they appeared on the cover of NME magazine. The band then spent the beginning of the year touring the 2011 NME Awards Tour, supporting Crystal Castles. They also travelled to America for the first time. Having been signed to Columbia Records, the band released their second single “Post Break-Up Sex” on the 24th of January 2011 where it debuted at number 32 in the UK. It was at this time that the band were nominated for an MTV Award for 'Best New Band of 2011' and a Critics choice Brit Award.
On the 10th of June, the Vaccines performed as a supporting act for the Arctic Monkeys in a 10,000 capacity tent set up at Don Valley Bowl, Sheffield, playing alongside Dead Sons and Miles Kane. It followed a trip the two bands had made to America together. The Don Valley gig ushered in a summer of festivals around the world; the band claim to have played in 45 regions! In an interview the lead singer Justin Young said he was 'slightly concerned' that they wouldn't go down well on tour, but they did the exact opposite, the crowd took to them brilliantly, and I've heard people say that they preferred the Vaccines' performances somewhat more than Arctic Monkeys'! The Vaccines ended their summer at the Reading and Leeds festivals where they were named by NME magazine as being number 1 band of the weekend. They were joined on stage by the members of the Horrors. This wasn't the first time the Vaccines had collaborated on stage, they have previously been joined by Lyle Preslar of Minor Threat and Paul Thomson of Franz Ferdinand. Under sightly different circumstances the band have also been joined by Kate Moss, who plays drums and guitar with them in a television commercial for Rimmel.
In September 2011, unfortunatly the band were forced to postpone tours to Japan and the USA as well as shows across Europe, after lead vocalist and guitar player Justin Young encountered a reoccurring vocal issue which has resulted in him being operated on 3 times in the space of 9 months.
Wishing Justin a speedy recovery as rumours of album number 2 are around and I personally can't wait to get my hands on it!

Our chosen DPS register - TBC
Our overall register will be sophisticated but entertaining with the use of humour and abbreviations to make articles an easy read. However, there will be use of advanced and sophisticated vocabulary with a large amount of syllables to maintain a respected and professional view of the magazine. We hope to gain a positive reaction from readers and encourage them to want to know more about the bands and music we cover, in order to do this we will use an active and emotive voice. Our articles will be informative and believable with use of quotations and relevant background research.
Research into language & register of DPS
After looking closely at the register of this double page spread it was apparent that the language is entertaining and almost lyrical, this has been achieved by use of dry humour and wit and makes the article an easy read. Despite the friendly tone of the spread and use of abbreviations there is excessive use of complex sentences such as 'Indeed, while the formula of a concept album... own weight on the album' and advanced vocabulary like 'fruition' and 'rejuvenated' which causes it to feel more formal and sophisticated. there is noticeably use of punctuation such as full stops, comma's, exclamation marks and hyphens, also language techniques like rhetorical questions and alliteration of 'Dangerously Devious Dani' have been incorporated. Quotations and positive representation of Dani's band makes the article believable as well as emotive and active language. Constant mention of the bands song titles and albums is a good source of promotion and informs the readers a great deal. The overall reaction this article achieves is the reaction of surprise and interest, the register has cleverly been adapted to intrigue buyers to the band.

Poppy's similar product research (DPS) - metal hammer issue 212
In this double page spread the image of the subject of the article, Dani Filth, is extremely domineering and capture the attention of readers as it covers a whole side of the double spread. The top of the image has been cropped removing the top of Dani Filth's head. The heavily made up and bloodshot eyes make contact with the reader attracting them to the article. Also the unique and shocking costume and make-up links in well with the headline 'Darkly Devious Dani'. The word 'Devious' appears to have been hand written in blood again referring back to the staged image of Dani eating a brain. The letters 'W' and 'I' have been made into lead capitals and the quote 'I lived in.... stay in' has been pulled as it is probably one of the important facts the article has managed to uncover. The double spread has stuck to three main colours of red, white and black and even though there is alot of white space its simplicity is eye catching and creates more focus onto the image of Dani. The font is sans-serif and the overall registor of the article is formal with use of complex dialect. The byline has been placed in small under the caption in a bold red font. Also, a splash has been used to give the subjects impressions of the 'days specials'. The entire composition of the double page spread has been well thought out to correspond with the content of the article.
Poppy's similar product research (DPS) - Clash (issue 34)
The headlines for this double page spread are simplistic and not very dominating of the article however they are clear and concise. The overal tone of this double page spread is infromal with use of cursing and much addressing of the reader. Yellow fact box's have been placed at the bottom of each section of writing. A large amount of white space creates a sophisticated and clean appearence and it is noticable the images have been overlaped by the text breaking them up. The sans-serif font is in keeping with the modern qualities of the three bands. Quotes have been pulled and placed at the top of each section of the writing. Despite the fact the pages have been sectioned into three the 'baddies' have a whole side of the double page spread drawing slighty more attention to their band and the headline for this side is also slightly bigger. The images apart from the one of the baddies are unstaged which is unsual for a magazine. Bylines have been added for all three sections however it does not state who has taken the photos. Overall this double page is easy to navigate around and gives an impression of raw talent as it has stuck to a simple theme.

Becca's Similar Product Research (DPS) - Mixmag Issue Feb 2009
This double page spread from Mixmag magazine is picture led and the picture is clearly staged and edited. There is a lot of white space and this makes the colours stand out. A byline is used to tell us who wrote the article and who took the photographs. The article starts with a leading capital and its mode of address is formal because of the vocabulary used throughout the article. I personally like the idea of a DPS that is picture led like the Metal Hammer DPS as it gives the reader something to look at instead of just a massive article to read. Also, bright colours appeal to the eye and this is what I liked about the Clash DPS. A white space is a good idea because it makes the black writing clear to read and it looks modern.
Becca's Similar Product Research (DPS) - Clash Issue 34
All three images are at the top of the DPS but they are cropped as the bottoms of the images are underneath the articles, which is unusual. The images are staged and are edited as the all have a green/yellow tinge to them. There are pull quotes under all three images from the three articles. Underneath them there are bylines which tell us who wrote the articles. The 'Baddies' article starts with a leading capital and also a standing first; which shows the first line is important, in this case it is introducing the audience to the band. For the 'Baddies' article the mode of address is formal because of the vocabulary used such as, 'glorious grotesgues'. Also a little informal because of the language, 'piss-taking'. The other two articles are both formal. There is a great deal of white space on this DPS and this makes the other colours stand out and also makes the articles easy to read.
Becca's Similar Product Research (DPS) - Metal Hammer Issue 212
This double page spread is from the magazine Metal Hammer, Issue 212 and is about Cradle of Filth. Is is picture led and the picture is clearly staged and edited. There is a caption in a black box next to the picture. The article about 'Darkly Devious Dani' is started with a leading capital which makes the beginning of the article clear. There is a byline under the main heading which tells us who wrote the article and who took the picture. The title of the article is in capital letters and all in the same font apart from 'devious' which is artwork/graphic design, the design style matches the meaning of the word as it looks like its scribbled/scratched. The articles mode of address is formal, even though the theme is heavy metal, the writer expects that the reader can cope with big, complicated words, such as 'equilibrium'. At the bottom of the page there is a pull quote, which is a piece of text pulled from the article and made big and bold so that it is known to be an important part of the article. The background is a white brick wall which makes the four colour print of black, red, grey and flesh stand out.

Becca's Front Cover Analysis - July 2010 issue
The white background makes the pink masthead stand out. Calvin Harris is the artist on the front cover and he will be the main story or the main feature the July edition of the magazine. Calvin is a DJ and in the reflection of his sunglasses are some DJ decks/equipment. He is wearing a yellow t-shirt which stands out and contrasts to the pink, he also has a white blazer on which matches the background. All of the subtitles are pink which match the house style and are on a slant which makes the front cover look more modern and eye catching.

The teenagers that took part in the survey liked a range of different music, such as Indie, Rock, Dance, R&B but we gave the option for them to write any other suggestions, Metal was quite popular and Classical/Acoustic was also, along with Bollywood and Gangster Rap however there was only one vote for each of these and this is why we chose not to use them in our magazine. The title name which was most popular was 'Beatz' with 17 votes and for our masthead we will use Beatz (with the headphones over the t) as this was the most popular to the teens. The colour pink for the house style was not popular at all, purple and orange got the same amount of votes, so we decided to use a different colour for both magazines (Poppy will use purple and I will use orange). Heiti SC and Gothic writing were the most eye catching to the teens so we will use Heiti SC as it got the most votes. The features of the magazine that we offered were all quite popular, well known bands, in depth articles and gigs in particular, so these will be included in the magazines. We haven't yet decided whether the subscription will be monthly weekly or fortnightly as they got the same amount of votes. The cost of the magazine will either be £1.50 or £2.00.

Becca's similar product research 'Mixmag Issue Feb 2008' front cover
The black background makes the group dressed in white stand out. Also the masthead is eye catching because it is white on a black background. The orange and yellow writing are the titles of the cover stories that are in the magazine. The group pictured on the front of the magazine are Deadmau5; the picture has been used of them as the magazine are giving a free Deadmau5 cd out with the magazine. The san serif font is used throughout the front cover which makes the magazine seem more modern and useful which fits in with theb target audience on the magazine. The orange writing appeals to both male and female readers so I will use orange as the colour for my masthead.

Becca & Poppy, What have we learnt?
Some of the skills we have learnt since the beggining of this course are:
1. How to manipulate the shutter speed on a camera to get a good quality picture
- High Speed - Good quality
- Low Speed - Poor quality
2. How the Apeture of the cameral controls the amount of light that is channeled through the iris of the lense. the ammount that the iris is open is called the f-stop and the larget the f-stop the less amount of light its allowed to channel through. The smaller the iris the larger the depth of field.
- High f-stop - slow shutter speed
- Low f-stop - fast shutter speed
3. How the ISO effect the detail and colour of the image.
- Bright day: 100 ISO
- Cloudy/Movement: 400 ISO
- Indoor/ Low light: 1600 ISO
Adobe
What we have covered:
- How to choose text styles to suit the title and magazine content.
- How to work with different layers of the magazine.
- How to Liquefy text (select text > Filter > Distort > Liquefy)
- How to simplify the text so that it becomes easier to edit. (right click on layer > Select simplify layer)
- How to fill letters with colour and images. ( Select text with magic wand > outline) or (Paste in image > Simplify Layer > paste into selection)
- How to edit gradients, apply shadows and outline text.

Becca and Poppy's Contents page analysis
BBC music mag:
The colours of this magazine are kept minimal to emphasise the simplistic qualities of distinctive music. The language of the contents page is much more formal in comparison to the register of the Dj Mag issue showing its different approach to music. Numerous live photography has been used, suggesting that the magazine stories havent been manipulated therefore the reader knows what they are reading is of some truth and the magazine is much more reliable. The font style is classy and simple, representing the company as a whole, and many people are aware that the BBC is well known for its sophistication and class. Again the stories have been numbered and the adverts left to make navigation through the magazine much quicker. Musical features such as the dots on the three like on a base clef is a great way to remind the reader of the style of magazine they are reading. This would not be a style we would want to use as it would not appeal to our target audience and would not sell as well to the youth.
'Q' magazine, Issue May 2008 - Becca's front cover analysis
The masthead is placed in the top right corner of the magazine and the white 'Q' on the red background makes it stand out and is appealing to the readers eye. The house style is red, black and white. The black background makes everything on it stand out. Also the white writing is very clear to read. There are banners across the magazine advertising what is inside, and the top features of the magazine are all on the front cover, reeling the reader in. 'Britain's Biggest Music Mag' is used as the sell line which would also make the reader want to buy the magazine as it is 'Britain's Biggest'. A sans serif font has been chosen for the text. Madonna's name has been written in capitals, which makes it stand out as it is the main feature of the magazine, Madonna is also the face of the magazine in this issue. A puff has been used where they have adressed the audience by saying they voted for 'The 50 Best British Albums'. Also on the cover down the left hand side there is a list of the music artists that are featured in the magazine which also helps to attract the reader to buy the magazine if they are artists they like.
Poppy and Becca's Contents Page analysis (similar product research)
Dj Mag (No. 70 February 2009 issue)
The language and register of the
magazine appears casual and informal for example 'Up yours!' used as
a story headline. The representation of the magazine is clean cut and
modern which is emphasised by a posed picture of the rugged but
stylish Josh Wink. There is a large range of images used, such as
live content and designed photos to sell the stories inside the
magazine. There is a wide range of colours used to divide the
contents page into its main topics helping to navigate around the
page much faster. The layout is well constructed and clear to read,
this is aided by the simple and catchy font style selected fitting in
with the style of the magazine itself. The main stories have been
numbered to state the stories from the adverts helping readers to
jump straight to the content that interests them. This is the style
of contents page most suitable for our initial magazine ideas as it
would be most appealing to our target audience and is in keeping with
latest music trends and interests.

Initial Ideas for Music Magazine - Poppy
The letter 'B' will have
headphones around it which links nicely to the key idea of a music
magazine.
House Style:
Black, white and metallic purple with silver as part of the masthead
Target audience:
the age we have decided on is between 16 and 20 and is aimed at both
genders of this age group. A specific age has been selected in order
to help with the specialising of the content of the magazine to suit
this range.
Magazine content:
Chart hits from Radio1 official top 40, we will then narrow this down
to the most popular and most played top 15 and top 3 albums bought.
As well as their amount sold and money made from their sales. This
will be updated monthly and contain 2 interviews, one from the artist
with the number one song and the other from the artist with the
number one album.
Music magazine, Initial Ideas - Becca
Initial ideas for music magazine.
Magazine name: we chose ''Beatz'' as our masthead because it appeals to our target audience. Also the use of 'z' instead of 's' makes the title more youthful and modern which will attract the attention of our target audience. Around the letter 'B' will be a pair of headphones, this links to the type of magazine which is music.
House style: Black, white and metallic purple with silver headphones as part of the headmast.
Target audience: 'Beatz' is suitable for either males or females. Our target audience are teenagers from the age of 16 up to 20 as this is the age who are more likely to check the top charts on Radio 1.
Magazine content: Chart hits from Radio 1's official top 40 UK chart, we will then narrow that down to the most popular and most played 15 songs! Also we will check out what the top 3 albums bought are around the UK and how many were sold of each album. Their will be two interviews in the magazine, one with the artist with the top song, and the other from the artist with the top album. An issue of the magazine will be released monthly.

Poppy's Music Cover Analysis - "Q" May 2008 issue (29.9.11)

There is no white space as the colour scheme is black red and grey. There are banners that have been placed at an angle advertising whats inside. The masthead has been placed in the corner and is simple as there has only been use of one letter for the name of the mag. A sans serif font has been chosen for the text and madonna's name has been written in drop capitals to make the main feature of the mag clear. The sell line used is 'Britain's Biggest Music Mag' which is very bold and to the point as though it is factual rather than an opinionated. There is use of puff's whereabouts they have used the mode of address to involve the audience. There is a list of the music artists featured in the mag down the left hand side of the cover which also helps to attract the reader to buy the mag. x
Poppy Preliminary - Front Cover (29.9.11)

- I chose a black and white effect for my front cover because it adds to the sophistication of the model and the college campus.
- The colour of the font was part of the black and white theme I had chosen and the colours work well with the background.
- The font style's is also a classic font chosen to work with the lushness of the image.
- I decided on 'sweet 6th form' as the headline as its a play on words to symbolise the students as 'sweet' and the fact that most students begin 6th form at the age of 16 known as their 'sweet 16th' .
Becca's Annotation - Front Cover (29.9.11)
I chose to do the title in this font because it looks like a pencil line and it is clear to read. I used the same font throughout the front cover because it is easy to read and doesn't confuse people. I used navy blue as it matches the girls jacket and it contrasts the white background. I chose to use the colours red and white for the headlines as they are vibrant colours and easy to read and they will attract readers attention. The picture in the background has followed the rule of thirds and this draws the attention of the reader to the girls face. I chose this picture as it follows the rule of thirds and the model looks happy and natural, this shows that the college is a relaxed place to be.
